Наткнулась в английском тексте на слово soothsayer - прорицатель, ворожея, гадалка. "Фигассе, - подумала я, - наверное, сложно обмануться, если даже сам язык называет таких людей sooth-sayer, весьма трезвый подход". Стало интересно, полезла в этимологический словарь, а там, там!
mid-14c., zoþ ziggere (Kentish), "one who speaks truth,;" late 14c., sothseggere, "fortune-teller;" see sooth + say. Old English had soðsagu "act of speaking the truth."
То есть sooth когда-то и означало правду. Однако! Как говорится, вотэтоповорот. А как же тогда оно пришло к нынешнему значению? Смотрим глагол to soothe:
Old English soðian "show to be true," from soð "true" (see sooth). Sense of "quiet, comfort, mollify" is first recorded 1690s, via notion of "to assuage one by asserting that what he says is true" (i.e. to be a yes-man), a sense attested from 1560s (and compare Old English gesoð "a parasite, flatterer"). Meaning "reduce the intensity" (of a pain, etc.) is from 1711. Related: Soothed; soothing.
Забавно. Там дальше в существительном еще сложные отношения вина/правда, но туда я уже не полезу.

Date: 2014-07-17 12:01 pm (UTC)Смысл, видимо, в том, что оба корня восходят к одной общеиндоевропейской основе. А вот семантические связи опять-таки кажутся мне весьма натянутыми. Тут бы основообразующие суффиксы посмотреть, кабы по уму.
